The reason for his headache has conflicting stories as some say Pipp was just under the weather, others claim he got hit in the head by a pitch in the game prior, and some even allege that he was hungover (though this was in the middle of prohibition so it’s unlikely). Either way, the trainer gave him two aspirin and, declining to play that day, Pipp told the manager “Let the young kid play first today.” Little did Pipp know, he would never play first base for the Yankees again because that young kid was Lou Gehrig.įuture Hall of Famer, Gehrig went on to play in 2,130 consecutive games over 14 seasons earning the nickname ‘the Iron Man”. He was a significant contributor to the Yankees infamous Murderers Row, winning the 1927 World Series with Babe Ruth right by his side.

On that Tuesday when Pipp got to the ballpark, he had a headache. On June 2, 1925, the Yankees were 41 games into the season, in second-to-last place, and on a losing streak. He was a powerful lefty that was considered one of the league’s best power hitters. Until he wasn’t. Walter “Wally” Pipp played first base for the New York Yankees from 1915 to 1925 and had a great career in the dead ball era. He won batting titles, three pennants, and the 1923 World Series.

For those of you who know me, you likely know that I am huge baseball fan and love to learn about its rich history, to follow players, and to root for my favorite teams. And one day in the office about 10 years ago, I was running a fever and getting ready to head home early. One of my buddies, said “Don’t be a Wally Pipp!” and I no idea what he was talking about and he explained the story to me. To this day, I have a replica baseball card of Wally Pipp on my desk. I have found it motivating in the business world, thus the title of this message. Before my thoughts on how to apply the lessons learned to business and in life, I need to set the stage with some context and history.
